Trump says us has restrained Israel from further strikes on Lebanon

Washington: US President Donald Trump has stated that Israel will no longer carry out bombing operations on Lebanon, signalling a possible de-escalation in the ongoing conflict in the region. His remarks come amid heightened tensions and international concern over the humanitarian impact of the violence.

Taking an unusually firm tone against a close ally, Trump said the United States had intervened to prevent further strikes. “This cannot continue anymore,” he said, adding that Washington has actively restrained Israel from launching additional attacks on Lebanese territory. The statement was shared on his social media platform Truth Social.

Trump also clarified that the US position on Israel’s actions in Lebanon is separate from its stance on Iran. “Our agreement with Iran has nothing to do with the Lebanon conflict,” he emphasised, attempting to draw a clear distinction between the two geopolitical issues.

There was no immediate response from the office of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. However, Netanyahu had earlier defended Israel’s military presence in southern Lebanon, citing the need to protect against rocket attacks and cross-border threats.

A 10-day ceasefire between Israel and Lebanon reportedly came into effect on Thursday, offering temporary relief after days of intense hostilities. The conflict escalated after the Iran-backed militant group Hezbollah launched attacks on northern Israel earlier this year.

The violence has taken a heavy toll, with Lebanese authorities reporting that nearly 2,000 people have been killed in Israeli strikes. The situation has drawn global attention, with calls for restraint and diplomatic resolution growing louder.

Trump’s latest remarks indicate a shift towards de-escalation, though uncertainties remain over how long the fragile ceasefire will hold.
