Bangladesh Hindu man killed after being run over at petrol pump in Rajbari, two arrested
New Delhi/Dhaka: In a shocking incident that has sparked outrage, a 30-year-old Hindu man was killed in Bangladesh’s Rajbari district after being deliberately run over by a car whose occupants allegedly attempted to flee without paying for petrol.
The victim, identified as Ripon Saha, died on the spot after being hit by the speeding vehicle while trying to stop it at a petrol pump. According to police, the incident occurred in the early hours of Friday at around 4.30 am at Karim Filling Station near Goland More in Rajbari district.
The accused, identified as Abul Hashim alias Sujan (55), the owner of the car, and Kamal Hossain (43), the driver, had filled petrol worth 5,000 Bangladeshi taka (approximately ₹3,710). When they attempted to flee without making the payment, Ripon Saha intervened and tried to block the vehicle.
Eyewitness accounts and preliminary investigation suggest that instead of stopping, the driver accelerated the car and rammed it into Ripon Saha, knocking him down and causing fatal injuries. The accused then fled the scene, leaving the victim critically injured. Ripon succumbed to his injuries on the spot.
Police later traced and arrested both the car owner and the driver, seizing the vehicle involved in the crime. Rajbari Sadar police station officer Khondaker Ziaur Rahman confirmed that a murder case would be registered against the accused.
“The victim attempted to stop the car when the accused tried to escape without paying for petrol. They deliberately ran him over and fled. Legal action will be taken under relevant sections,” the officer said.
Police sources revealed that Abul Hashim is a contractor by profession and a former treasurer of the Rajbari district unit of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP). He also previously served as the president of the district unit of Jubo Dal, the youth wing affiliated with the BNP. The political background of the accused has further intensified public scrutiny and criticism.
The killing of Ripon Saha has triggered widespread condemnation, with many describing it as yet another instance of violence targeting members of the Hindu minority in Bangladesh.
Rights activists and community leaders have raised concerns over the growing sense of insecurity among minorities, urging the Bangladesh government to ensure strict punishment for those responsible and to take concrete measures to prevent such incidents.
As investigations continue, the incident has once again brought the issue of minority safety in Bangladesh into sharp focus, drawing attention both nationally and internationally.
