ChatGPT Ads Expand To India With Sponsored Content For Eligible Users
OpenAI has expanded ChatGPT Ads to India, bringing clearly labeled sponsored placements to eligible Free and Go users while keeping ads separate from answers and advertiser access to private conversations.

ChatGPT users in India are beginning to see a new development as OpenAI expands its advertising platform to the country. The company has opened ChatGPT Ads to advertisers in India, marking another major step in the growth of advertising within the artificial intelligence platform.
The change is mainly relevant to eligible users on the Free and Go plans. However, OpenAI says accounts identified as belonging to users under 18 are not shown ads. This means the advertising experience is not the same for every ChatGPT user.
For eligible users, advertisements can appear below a ChatGPT response and are clearly marked as sponsored content. The ads are visually separated from the main response so that users can distinguish paid placements from information generated by ChatGPT.
The move is significant for businesses because people increasingly use ChatGPT when researching products, comparing options and deciding what to buy. A company can therefore reach potential customers while they are already exploring a particular topic or category.
OpenAI says advertisements are selected using relevant information within ChatGPT, depending on the user’s advertising settings. This can include the subject of the current conversation and basic context such as general location or language. When personalised advertising is enabled, additional signals from a user’s broader ChatGPT experience may also be used.
Even with this system, OpenAI says advertisers do not receive access to users’ private conversations. Advertisers also do not get access to chat history, memories or personal details. Instead, advertisers receive aggregated information about how their advertisements perform, such as views and clicks.
Another important point is that advertisements do not determine or change the answers provided by ChatGPT. OpenAI says its advertising system operates separately from the system that generates ChatGPT responses. An advertisement appearing alongside an answer therefore does not mean that the product or company has influenced the response.
The expansion also creates a new opportunity for Indian businesses. OpenAI says self service access to ChatGPT Ads through its Ads Manager is launching across India, allowing advertisers to create and manage campaigns through the platform.
This could be particularly relevant for companies trying to reach people who are actively researching products or services. Instead of showing an advertisement in a traditional feed, ChatGPT Ads are designed to appear in a conversational environment where users are already looking for information.
For users, the appearance of advertisements does not mean that every ChatGPT conversation will contain advertising. Eligibility, location, account type and OpenAI’s advertising safeguards can determine whether ads are displayed.
OpenAI has also introduced controls for the advertising experience. Eligible users can manage ad personalisation, dismiss advertisements, provide feedback and review why a particular advertisement is being shown. Free users in regions where ads are available can also choose an ads free option, although this comes with lower usage limits.
The company has stressed that privacy remains a central part of the advertising system. Advertisers are not given users’ chats or personal information, and OpenAI says it does not sell conversations to advertisers.
The arrival of ChatGPT Ads in India is therefore more than a simple change to the ChatGPT interface. It represents the expansion of a new advertising model around conversational search and product discovery.
For eligible users, the most noticeable difference will be the appearance of clearly identified sponsored content around some conversations. For businesses, the development opens another route to reach customers who are actively researching and comparing products.
At the same time, users should remember that an advertisement is a paid placement and should not automatically be treated as an endorsement or recommendation from OpenAI. ChatGPT responses and advertisements remain separate.
