KRS Dam Releases More Water Than Inflow As Cauvery Outflow To Tamil Nadu Continues

KRS Dam is currently releasing 8544 cusecs of water while inflow has fallen to 3864 cusecs, raising fresh concerns over reservoir storage and Cauvery water management in Karnataka.

The Cauvery water issue is once again drawing attention in Karnataka as the KRS Dam near Srirangapatna continues to record a higher outflow than inflow. According to the figures provided, the reservoir is currently receiving 3864 cusecs of water while 8544 cusecs is being released.

The difference between the two figures has become a point of concern, particularly among people closely watching the water position in the region. The situation comes amid continued debate over the release of Cauvery water towards Tamil Nadu.

The current water level at the KRS reservoir stands at 109.32 feet, while the total storage is reported at 31.044 TMC. The dam has a maximum water level of 124.80 feet and a total storage capacity of 49.452 TMC.

The latest figures show that the reservoir is not receiving water at the same rate at which it is being released. With the inflow at 3864 cusecs and outflow at 8544 cusecs, the release is more than twice the amount of water entering the reservoir at present.

The development has attracted attention because water availability at KRS is closely linked to the requirements of farmers and other users dependent on the Cauvery system. Any prolonged period of high outflow combined with weak inflows could put additional pressure on reservoir storage.

The issue has also revived questions about Karnataka’s Cauvery water management. While the state government has maintained its position regarding the release of water to Tamil Nadu, water continuing to flow out of the KRS reservoir has led to renewed discussion among the public.

For farmers in the Cauvery basin, reservoir levels remain particularly important as rainfall and inflow conditions can change quickly. If inflows decline further while outflow remains elevated, maintaining adequate storage for future requirements could become more challenging.

The present storage of 31.044 TMC is below the reservoir’s maximum capacity of 49.452 TMC. The water level is also 15.48 feet below the maximum level of 124.80 feet.

The situation will depend heavily on rainfall and future inflows into the reservoir. A rise in inflow could ease some pressure on storage, while continued low inflow could make water management more difficult.

For now, the KRS figures provide a clear snapshot of the reservoir’s position. The dam is receiving 3864 cusecs but releasing 8544 cusecs, making the current outflow substantially higher than the inflow.

As the Cauvery water issue remains politically and socially sensitive in Karnataka, further changes in KRS water levels and release volumes are likely to remain under close watch in the coming days.
