Apple Foldable iPhone Ultra May Arrive Without the Tested Apple Pencil

Apple is preparing for the arrival of its first foldable iPhone, and fresh reports suggest the company explored a new accessory specifically for the device. The accessory was reportedly a smaller Apple Pencil designed to work with the foldable smartphone.

The Pencil has apparently reached the prototype and testing stage inside Apple, but that does not necessarily mean consumers will see it at launch. Current reports indicate that Apple may hold back the accessory from the first generation of its foldable iPhone.

The foldable iPhone is widely expected to receive a premium Ultra branding, although Apple has not officially confirmed the name or the reported features. The device is expected to be introduced at an upcoming September event.

Small Pencil Designed for the Foldable iPhone

According to Bloomberg journalist Mark Gurman, Apple internally developed and tested a Pencil intended for the foldable iPhone. Unlike the Apple Pencil models designed for the iPad, this version was reportedly shorter and more compact.

The smaller body would make sense for a foldable smartphone. A regular sized stylus could be inconvenient to carry alongside a phone, particularly when the device itself folds into a smaller form. Apple therefore appears to have considered a design that could be easier to carry with the handset.

The reported prototype was not simply a shortened version of the existing accessory. Apple was also said to have considered how the Pencil could be stored and charged while being used with the new smartphone.

Magnetic Attachment Was Also Considered

One of the more interesting details surrounding the prototype is its reported magnetic attachment system. The Pencil was said to be capable of attaching to the side of the foldable iPhone using magnets.

The same area could potentially have been used for charging, creating an experience similar to the way compatible Apple Pencil models attach magnetically to certain iPad models.

Such an arrangement could have made the accessory easier to carry without requiring a separate case or charging accessory. However, bringing that system to a foldable phone could present engineering challenges that are not found on conventional smartphones.

Why the Apple Pencil May Not Launch

The biggest challenge could be the foldable display itself. Unlike traditional smartphone screens, foldable panels require different materials and construction methods. Apple would need to make sure that regular stylus use would not create unwanted marks or put additional stress on the display.

A Pencil with a hard tip could raise concerns about the long term durability of a foldable screen. This becomes even more important for a premium device where display repairs could be expensive.

The magnetic placement could also complicate the phone’s folding mechanism. Apple would have to ensure that the Pencil does not interfere with opening or closing the handset while also keeping the accessory securely attached during everyday use.

For these reasons, the company may have decided that releasing the Pencil alongside the first foldable iPhone is not worth the additional design compromises.

Future iPhone Pencil Could Still Happen

The decision to postpone the accessory would not necessarily mean Apple has abandoned the idea completely. Companies routinely develop and test products that never reach the market, especially when they are working on an entirely new device category.

Apple could revisit the compact Pencil concept once foldable displays become more durable and the company finds a more practical way to integrate a stylus with the handset.

For now, expectations are that the first foldable iPhone could arrive without the specially designed Pencil. The reported device itself is expected to be one of Apple’s most ambitious smartphone launches, but several details remain unconfirmed until the company makes an official announcement.

Apple has not confirmed the iPhone Ultra name, the compact Pencil or the reported September launch details. The final specifications, accessories and pricing will become clear only when the company officially unveils the device.
