Airtel Gains Millions of Users in TRAI Report While Jio Retains Lead and Vodafone Idea Faces Subscriber Loss
TRAI January 2026 telecom report shows strong subscriber growth for Airtel steady leadership for Jio and continued customer losses for Vodafone Idea highlighting intense competition in India telecom market.

TRAI Report Highlights Changing Telecom Competition
The latest telecom data released by the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India shows how competition among major operators in the country continues to intensify. The January 2026 report reveals noticeable shifts in subscriber growth across leading telecom companies.
While Reliance Jio continues to maintain the largest subscriber base in the country, Bharti Airtel has recorded strong customer growth during the month. At the same time Vodafone Idea is facing increasing pressure after losing subscribers.
Airtel Records Strong Subscriber Growth
Bharti Airtel began the year on a strong note by adding around 4.4 million new mobile subscribers in January alone. This increase pushed the company’s total wireless subscriber base from about 463.3 million to nearly 467.7 million.
Industry analysts view this growth as a significant development for Airtel as the company continues to expand its network services and strengthen its position in the Indian telecom sector.
Jio Continues to Lead the Market
Reliance Jio maintained its position as the largest telecom operator in the country. During the same period the company added around 2.4 million new subscribers taking its total customer base to approximately 491.4 million.
Affordable data plans and rapid network expansion continue to play a key role in Jio’s sustained growth. The company’s strategy has helped it remain the market leader despite strong competition from other operators.
Vodafone Idea Faces Subscriber Decline
The situation for Vodafone Idea remains challenging. According to the TRAI report the telecom operator lost nearly 411000 subscribers in January. This decline reduced the company’s overall subscriber base to around 199 million users.
The continued loss of customers highlights the pressure the company faces as it tries to compete with stronger rivals in the market.
Broadband Market Also Expanding
The broadband segment is also witnessing rapid growth across the country. The total number of broadband subscribers has now reached around 1.05 billion.
In this segment Jio continues to dominate with nearly 49 percent market share while Airtel holds the second position with about 34 percent share. State owned BSNL and Vodafone Idea follow behind in the rankings.
Overall the TRAI report suggests that competition in India’s telecom sector is becoming increasingly intense. Airtel is gaining momentum while Jio continues to defend its leading position and Vodafone Idea faces significant challenges in retaining its users.
