Karnataka government to introduce menstrual leave policy for women employees: Minister Santosh Lad

Bengaluru Karnataka labor minister Santosh Lad on Saturday announced that the state government is preparing to implement a rule granting one paid menstrual leave day every month to women employees across sectors.
Speaking to reporters, Lad said, “Once the government enacts a law, companies will have to comply. The government will either introduce a bill in the legislature or issue a notification to implement this policy.”
The proposal, titled ‘Menstrual Policy 2025’, has already received cabinet approval. Lad said the new rule is not merely a legal formality but a progressive and humane initiative aimed at supporting working women. “Employers must look at this from a humanitarian perspective, not just as a law,” he added.
Responding to concerns that the policy might discourage companies from hiring women, Lad said, “Let’s first implement it and observe its impact. Several private companies are already following similar practices voluntarily.”
He emphasized that organizations should show sensitivity and awareness towards the needs of women employees. “If any issues arise after implementation, the government will review and make necessary adjustments,” he said.
Highlighting the social and psychological pressures faced by women, especially in the middle class, the minister noted, “Women manage both home and work responsibilities. A single day of rest can rejuvenate them to work more efficiently the next day.”
The initiative marks a significant step towards gender-sensitive labor reforms in Karnataka, aligning with a broader national conversation on menstrual health and workplace equality.
