IPL 2026: Mini auction date, venue, retentions rules and salary cap
IPL 2026: The Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026 auction is expected to be a mini-auction, not a mega-auction. This means that teams will mostly focus on fine-tuning their squads by releasing a smaller number of players and targeting specific needs, rather than a complete overhaul of their rosters. IPL 2026: Mini auction date, venue, retentions rules and salary cap.

Here’s what we know so far about the IPL 2026 mini-auction:
The IPL Governing Council and BCCI are expected to make a formal announcement regarding the exact date and venue in late June to July 2025.
Auction Timing: Reports suggest the mini-auction will likely take place in January or February 2026.
Trading Windows: There are several trading windows that precede and follow the auction:
Pre-Auction Trade Window: June – July 2025 (currently open, allowing teams to negotiate retentions and early trades).
Post-Auction Trade Window: December 2025 – January 2026 (for final roster adjustments).
Pre-Tournament Trade Window: February – March 2026 (last chance to tweak squads before the season).
Venue:
Traditional mini-auction venues have been in Mumbai and Delhi (India) due to logistical ease. However, following the 2025 mega-auction being held in Jeddah (an international location), there’s some speculation about the possibility of a non-Indian venue for future auctions, depending on BCCI’s strategic direction. As of now, no official venue has been confirmed.

Format and Rules:
Mini Auction vs Mega Auction: Unlike a mega auction where most players go back into the pool and teams are largely rebuilt, a mini-auction focuses on filling gaps and fine-tuning existing squads.
Player Pool: Expect around 50-80 players (Indians and overseas) to be up for bidding, primarily released or underutilized players, along with new entrants.
Retentions: Teams can retain a total of 6 players from their existing squad, either via direct retention or by using the Right to Match (RTM) option. This combination can have a maximum of 5 capped players (Indian & Overseas) and a maximum of 2 uncapped players.
Salary Cap: The salary cap for franchises will increase to Rs 151 crore by IPL 2026 (up from Rs 146 crore in 2025 and Rs 120 crore in 2025’s mega-auction).
Match Fee: A match fee of Rs 7.5 Lakhs per match has been introduced for each playing member (including the Impact Player), in addition to their contracted amount. This rule continues from 2025.
Replacement Players: Any replacement player signed after the suspension of IPL 2025 (due to the India-Pakistan tensions) will not be eligible for retention in IPL 2026 and must return to the auction pool. However, players signed before the suspension remain eligible for retention.
Uncapped Player Rule: An Indian player will become uncapped if they have not played in the starting XI in international cricket (Test, ODI, T20I) or do not have a Central Contract with BCCI in the last five calendar years preceding the year of the relevant season.
Impact Player Rule: The Impact Player regulation will continue for the 2025 to 2027 cycle.
Many major players are expected to be released and re-enter the auction pool, creating opportunities for teams to make strategic acquisitions.
