DK Shivakumar loyalists’ dinner meet fuels leadership buzz in Karnataka Congress

Bengaluru : Fresh political speculation has gripped the ruling Indian National Congress in Karnataka after more than 40 MLAs considered loyal to Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar attended a private dinner meeting at a hotel in Bengaluru. The gathering, officially described as a birthday celebration of Magadi MLA H.C. Balakrishna, has triggered discussions about internal dynamics and leadership clarity within the party.
The dinner, held on Thursday night, saw the participation of several prominent ministers and legislators, including senior leaders and first-time MLAs. Photographs of the leaders seated together quickly went viral on social media, further intensifying speculation that the meeting was more than just a social occasion.
While organisers maintained that the event was purely informal, statements from some legislators suggested that political discussions did take place. Several MLAs reportedly expressed concern over continuing speculation surrounding leadership issues and urged the party high command to provide clarity in order to prevent confusion among party workers and voters.
Speaking to reporters, MLA H.C. Balakrishna clarified that the gathering was organised to celebrate his birthday and denied that it was a show of strength by any particular faction. “We are all Congress MLAs, and there is no division. However, it is important for the high command to take appropriate decisions on leadership matters and ensure unity within the party,” he said.
Other MLAs present at the meeting echoed similar sentiments, stating that unity and stability are crucial as the party prepares for upcoming electoral challenges. Some leaders emphasised that internal uncertainty could weaken the party’s position and create unnecessary distractions from governance and development priorities.
Political observers noted that such meetings often carry significance in the context of internal party equations, especially in a state like Karnataka where leadership balance and factional management play a key role in maintaining stability.
The leadership question has surfaced periodically since the Congress returned to power in the state, though the party leadership has consistently maintained that the government remains stable under Chief Minister Siddaramaiah and Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar.
Despite repeated reassurances, informal gatherings and political signalling by legislators continue to attract attention, reflecting the underlying political sensitivities within the ruling party.
For now, Congress leaders are attempting to project unity and downplay speculation, but the developments have once again brought the spotlight on internal coordination and leadership clarity in the Karnataka unit of the party.
