Mumbai: In a significant political development in Maharashtra, Congress leader Pragya Satav resigned from her position as a Member of the Legislative Council (MLC) on Thursday and joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).
Pragya Satav is the widow of the late Congress leader D. Rajeev Satav, a close aide of Rahul Gandhi. Hailing from Hingoli district in the Marathwada region, Pragya Satav had been first elected to the Maharashtra Legislative Council in 2021.
Following her husband’s demise in 2021, she served as the Vice President of the Maharashtra Pradesh Congress Committee. She was re-nominated to the Legislative Council in July last year, with her term originally set to continue until 2030.
On Thursday, Pragya Satav met Maharashtra Legislative Council Chairperson Ram Shinde to formally submit her resignation. Subsequently, she joined the BJP in the presence of state BJP Chief Ravindra Chavan and Finance Minister Chandrashekhar Bawankule. Sources indicate that former Solapur MLA Dileep Mane also joined the BJP alongside her.
Political analysts see her exit from Congress as a major setback for the party, especially with local body elections approaching. Maharashtra is scheduled to hold elections for 29 municipal corporations on January 15, with counting of votes slated for the following day. Pragya Satav’s move strengthens BJP’s position in the region, potentially influencing the outcome of these crucial elections.
Pragya Satav’s resignation and subsequent induction into the BJP come at a time when the Congress party is already grappling with internal challenges and organizational restructuring in Maharashtra. Her departure is expected to have both symbolic and practical implications, highlighting the BJP’s continued strategy of consolidating its influence in key constituencies.
This political shift also underscores the changing dynamics in the Marathwada region, where the BJP is aiming to expand its foothold ahead of the upcoming municipal elections. Pragya Satav, with her political experience and local influence, is likely to play a strategic role in consolidating BJP support in her constituency and beyond.
The Congress leadership has yet to publicly respond to this development, but political observers suggest that the party will need to quickly recalibrate its electoral strategy in the face of such defections, especially with high-stakes municipal elections around the corner.
Pragya Satav’s joining of the BJP marks another chapter in Maharashtra’s evolving political landscape, reflecting ongoing shifts ahead of critical local elections and signaling a potential change in voter dynamics in several districts.
