Vande Bharat sleeper train clears water test at 180 kmph, marks a historic milestone
New Delhi: In a significant technological breakthrough for Indian Railways, a Vande Bharat Sleeper train successfully completed a high-speed trial run at 180 kmph between Kota in Rajasthan and the Nagda section of Ujjain district in Madhya Pradesh.
Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw shared a video of the trial on social media, showcasing the train’s remarkable stability even at extremely high speeds. Calling it a moment that will be etched in golden letters in the history of Indian Railways, the minister highlighted the precision engineering and advanced technology behind the indigenous high-speed train.
The viral video shows a glass filled with water placed inside the coach remaining completely steady as the train crosses the 180 kmph mark, with not a single drop spilling. The successful “water test” has become a powerful symbol of the train’s balance, ride comfort and superior suspension system.
A global showcase of Indian engineering:
The water test is considered one of the most crucial benchmarks in high-speed rail testing, as it demonstrates minimal vibration and lateral movement even at peak speeds.
Experts believe that the Vande Bharat Sleeper’s performance places India among a select group of nations capable of manufacturing high-speed trains with world-class safety and comfort standards.
Railway officials said the trial was conducted under the close supervision of the Commissioner of Railway Safety on the Kota–Nagda railway section. The stretch was chosen due to its suitability for high-speed testing and advanced track infrastructure.
The successful run has generated excitement within railway circles and beyond, with many experts calling it a turning point for long-distance rail travel in the country.
Designed for long-distance comfort:
Unlike the existing Vande Bharat chair car variants, the Vande Bharat Sleeper train is specifically designed for overnight and long-distance journeys. Equipped with fully air-conditioned sleeper coaches, enhanced safety systems and improved ride quality, the train aims to significantly reduce travel time while offering airline-like comfort on rails.
According to the Railway Ministry, the sleeper version will soon be ready for commercial operations catering to AC class passengers. The introduction of sleeper Vande Bharat trains is expected to transform inter-city and inter-state travel, especially on routes covering long distances.
Strengthening ‘Make in India’:
The successful trial also reinforces the ‘Make in India’ initiative, as the Vande Bharat Sleeper train is completely indigenous. From design and manufacturing to testing and commissioning, the project reflects India’s growing self-reliance in advanced rail technology.
With the water test proving its stability at 180 kmph, Indian Railways has taken a decisive step towards faster, safer and more comfortable train travel. As more trials are completed and routes are upgraded, the Vande Bharat Sleeper is poised to redefine the future of rail transport in India, capturing global attention and national pride alike.
