Rahul Gandhi extends Diwali greetings, makes sweets at Delhi’s iconic Ghantewala bakery

New Delhi : Congress leader and Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi extended Diwali greetings to the nation on Sunday, celebrating the festival in a unique way — by visiting the iconic Ghantewala sweet shop in Old Delhi and trying his hand at making traditional sweets.

Rahul Gandhi shared a video of his visit on his social media handle X (formerly Twitter), where he was seen preparing Imarti (Jalebi) and Besan Laddoo alongside the shop’s workers.

“In the famous Ghantewala sweet shop of Old Delhi, I tried my hand at making Imarti (Jalebi) and Besan Laddoo,” he captioned the post, adding, “The sweets here are made in the traditional manner — with great effort and skill.”

During his visit, Gandhi interacted with the shop owner and employees, listening to stories about the bakery’s long history. The owner told him that the shop had supplied sweets to several prominent figures, including former Prime Ministers Indira Gandhi and Rajiv Gandhi.

Amid light-hearted moments, the shop owner reportedly told Gandhi, “I am waiting to prepare sweets for your wedding,” to which Rahul Gandhi responded with a smile.

In another social media post, Gandhi wished citizens a joyous Diwali, writing, “May India be illuminated with lights of happiness. May the light of joy, prosperity, and love spread in every home.”

The visit to the centuries-old Ghantewala bakery — considered one of Delhi’s most famous traditional sweet shops — drew considerable attention online, with netizens appreciating Gandhi’s gesture of engaging with local artisans and celebrating India’s festive spirit at the grassroots level.
