Passport Verification Process Easy Now: MEA made major changes
Passport Verification Process: The new feature, making the Passport Verification Record (PVR) available directly in DigiLocker, is a major initiative by the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) and the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY).
Key Features of the DigiLocker PVR Integration:
Document Available: Passport Verification Record (PVR). This is the official document generated after the police and other necessary verification checks are complete.
Issuing Authority: Issued digitally by the Central Passport Organisation (under MEA) directly into the DigiLocker platform.
Access Point: It appears automatically in the “Issued Documents” section of the user’s DigiLocker account (both mobile app and web portal) once the verification is successful.
How to Use: Users can view, download, and digitally share the PVR with authorized institutions via a consent-based sharing mechanism.
Benefits for the Citizen and the System:
1. Saves Time and Effort: Citizens no longer need to visit offices or rely on physical paper copies of the verification record. The record is instantly accessible after police verification.
2. Increased Security and Trust: Since the PVR is issued directly from the government’s official database, it is tamper-proof and fully verifiable. This eliminates the risk of falsified or altered records, which was a major concern with physical copies.
3. Faster Processes: The PVR is often required for background checks for jobs (especially in IT, finance, and aviation), visa applications, and other compliance checks. Instant digital access allows these verifications to be completed in seconds, reducing turnaround time.
4. Promotes Paperless Governance: It significantly reduces the dependence on physical paperwork, supporting the broader Digital India mission and promoting eco-friendly governance.
5. Unified Digital Wallet: The PVR is now stored alongside other essential documents like Aadhaar, PAN, and Driving License, making DigiLocker a comprehensive digital identity repository.
This initiative is a fantastic example of using technology to enhance citizen convenience, transparency, and the efficiency of public service delivery.
