Monsoon Onset Postponed as Kerala Awaits Seasonal Rains
India's weather department expects the southwest monsoon to arrive in Kerala on June 4, signaling a delayed start to the rainy season across the country.

The southwest monsoon, a key driver of India’s annual rainfall cycle, is now expected to reach Kerala on June 4. The revised timeline was announced by the India Meteorological Department, which noted that the seasonal rains are progressing more slowly than usual.
Under normal conditions, Kerala receives the first monsoon showers around June 1, marking the official start of the country’s rainy season. This year, however, atmospheric conditions have delayed the expected arrival by a few days.
According to meteorologists, the monsoon is likely to advance simultaneously over parts of Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Lakshadweep, and adjoining areas of the Arabian Sea. Weather systems in these regions are being closely monitored for further development.
The updated forecast follows an earlier prediction that suggested a faster movement of the monsoon. As weather patterns evolved, officials reassessed the situation and issued a new estimate regarding the onset date.
The timing of the monsoon remains crucial for agriculture, reservoir levels, and overall economic activity. Farmers across several states are waiting for the rains to begin sowing operations and prepare for the cultivation season.
Recent assessments from weather experts have also pointed to the possibility of rainfall levels remaining lower than normal in some parts of the country during the monsoon season. More clarity is expected as the weather system advances over the coming days.
