Lunar Eclipse 2025: What to do, what’s not

Lunar Eclipse 2025: A lunar eclipse is a beautiful celestial event that is completely safe to view. However, there are different perspectives on what to do and what not to do during this time, ranging traditional and astrological beliefs.

Traditional and Astrological Beliefs (Hinduism):

In many Indian traditions, a lunar eclipse (Chandra Grahan) is considered an inauspicious period, and certain rituals and precautions are followed. These beliefs are particularly strong during the “Sutak” period, which begins several hours before the eclipse.

What to do (as per tradition):

Take a bath: A ritual bath is recommended before and after the eclipse to cleanse oneself of any negative energy.

Chant mantras and meditate: This is considered a powerful time for spiritual practices. Chanting mantras like the Maha Mrityunjaya Mantra or the Vishnu Sahasranama is believed to ward off negative effects.

Purify the home: After the eclipse, it is customary to sprinkle Gangajal (holy water) around the house and on idols to purify the surroundings.

Observe a fast: Many people choose to fast during the Sutak period and the eclipse itself.

Protect food and water: Adding a few basil (Tulsi) leaves or a small piece of Kusha grass to cooked food and water is a common practice to prevent them from absorbing “negative energy.”

For pregnant women: Pregnant women are advised to stay indoors, not use sharp objects, avoid sleeping, and chant mantras for the well-being of the unborn child. Some also keep a coconut on their lap as a protective measure.

Do not sleep: Sleeping during the eclipse is considered inauspicious.

Avoid starting new ventures: Auspicious activities like weddings, housewarmings, or starting a new job are typically avoided.

Do not touch idols or the Tulsi plant: Temples are often closed during the eclipse, and it is advised not to touch deities or the sacred Tulsi plant.

Avoid physical intimacy: This is also considered to be an inauspicious act during the eclipse.
