India stands firmly with Israel in fight against terrorism, says PM Modi in historic Knesset address
Jerusalem: Prime Minister Narendra Modi, in his historic address at the Knesset, reaffirmed India’s unwavering support for Israel in the global fight against terrorism, declaring that terrorism can never be justified under any circumstances and that India stands firmly beside Israel in its fight against extremist violence.
Addressing the Israeli Parliament, Modi emphasized that the India–Israel relationship is built not merely on diplomatic engagement but on deep historical bonds forged through shared sacrifice and mutual respect. He recalled that over 4,000 Indian soldiers laid down their lives in the region during World War I, underscoring that the relationship between the two nations is rooted in “blood and sacrifice.”
Drawing parallels between terrorist attacks faced by both countries, Modi referred to the October 7 attack carried out by Hamas in Israel and the 2008 Mumbai terror attacks in India. He conveyed India’s deepest condolences to the victims of terrorism in Israel and expressed solidarity with the Israeli people.
“We feel your pain. We share your grief. India stands firmly with Israel now and in the future,” Modi said. He reiterated India’s zero-tolerance policy towards terrorism, stressing that no cause or ideology can justify the killing of innocent civilians.
The Prime Minister warned that terrorism poses a serious threat to global peace and stability, as it aims to destabilize societies, disrupt development, and weaken trust among nations. He called for coordinated global efforts to combat terrorism, emphasizing that unified international action is essential to eliminate the threat.
At the same time, Modi balanced his strong anti-terror stance with a call for diplomacy and peace. He said India supports dialogue and long-term peaceful solutions in the region, including efforts aimed at ensuring stability and lasting peace in Gaza and the broader Middle East.
In a symbolic reference, Modi noted that India officially recognized Israel on September 17, 1950 — the same day he was born. He described it as a meaningful coincidence and expressed pride in addressing one of the world’s oldest parliamentary institutions as the representative of another ancient civilization.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu described Modi’s visit as historic and praised him as one of Israel’s strongest global allies. Netanyahu said the India–Israel partnership has significantly expanded in recent years, particularly in defence, technology, cybersecurity, and innovation.
During the visit, Modi was honoured with the prestigious Speaker of the Knesset Medal, the highest recognition awarded by the Israeli Parliament, in acknowledgment of his role in strengthening bilateral ties.
The Prime Minister also highlighted plans to advance negotiations on a proposed Free Trade Agreement (FTA) aimed at boosting trade, investment flows, and joint infrastructure development. He stressed that India remains committed to expanding economic and strategic cooperation with Israel.
India–Israel relations have grown steadily since being elevated to a strategic partnership in 2017. Defence cooperation remains a key pillar, with India exploring advanced air defence technologies inspired by Israel’s proven systems. Trade and investment ties have also strengthened, supported by bilateral agreements signed in recent years.
With over 41,000 Indians living in Israel, Modi noted that people-to-people connections continue to deepen the friendship between the two nations, reinforcing a partnership built on shared values, strategic interests, and a common commitment to peace and security.
