Foxconn investment creates 30,000 jobs in Devanahalli: Credit war between Centre and State
Bengaluru: The establishment of Foxconn’s manufacturing facility near Devanahalli has created 30,000 jobs, leading to a credit war between the Centre and the state government.
Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw credited the Modi government for this achievement, stating that the central government’s efforts were responsible for attracting such a major investment.
In response, Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah countered, asserting that it was the state government’s efforts that made the investment possible. He questioned why jobs were not being created in BJP-ruled states if it was solely the Centre’s contribution.
The exchange of words escalated as BJP State President BY Vijayendra criticized the state government’s industrial policies, claiming that the state’s investment climate was not conducive for businesses.
He pointed out that companies like Ether, Toyota, and Foxconn chose to invest in neighboring states due to the lack of a robust investment framework in Karnataka. He also accused Deputy CM of Karnataka, D.K. Shivakumar, of intimidating industrialists, which, he argued, had discouraged further investment.
In response to Vijayendra’s remarks, senior Congress leaders including Minister for Industries M.B. Patil and ITBT Minister Priyank Kharge hit back, accusing the BJP of attempting to distort facts.
The approval for the Foxconn project was initially granted by the Basavaraj Bommai government in 2023, and it is the Siddaramaiah government that has continued to move the project forward, they pointed out.
This debate over credit for the Foxconn investment comes amidst growing concerns over Karnataka’s industrial policies, which have been criticized for not attracting sufficient investments. Both the Congress and BJP seem keen to take ownership of the project’s success, as it has the potential to reshape the state’s industrial landscape and create thousands of jobs.
The Foxconn investment, which is seen as a part of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s “Make in India” initiative, is expected to have a long-lasting impact on Karnataka’s economy. However, the political drama surrounding it is likely to continue as both parties vie for the credit for the project’s success.
