Supreme Court of India Judge (2017-2023):

In February 2017, Justice Nazeer was elevated to the Supreme Court of India. He was notably the third judge to be directly elevated to the Supreme Court without first serving as the Chief Justice of a High Court. During his tenure at the Supreme Court, he was part of several significant benches and delivered notable judgments.

Some of the key cases he was involved in include:

The Ayodhya land dispute case (2019), where he was part of the five-judge bench that delivered the historic verdict in favor of the construction of a Ram Mandir. The Triple Talaq case (2017), where he was the lone Muslim judge on the multi-faith bench. While he upheld the validity of Triple Talaq based on Muslim Sharia Law, the practice was eventually barred by a 3:2 majority of the bench.

The Fundamental Right to Privacy case (2017), where he was a member of the nine-judge bench that unanimously declared privacy as a fundamental right under Article 21 of the Constitution. The Demonetisation Scheme case (2023), where he led a five-judge Constitution Bench that upheld the Union’s 2016 demonetisation policy.

A case regarding the Freedom of Speech and Expression under Article 19(1)(a), where a Constitution Bench led by him held that it can only be restricted under the limitations given in Article 19(2). He retired from the Supreme Court on January 4, 2023.

Governor of Andhra Pradesh (2023-Present):

Shortly after his retirement from the Supreme Court, Justice S. Abdul Nazeer was appointed as the 24th Governor of Andhra Pradesh on February 12, 2023. He assumed office on February 24, 2023.
