The total covid caseload in the country is 4.50 crore (4,50,04,816). The number of people who have recovered from the infection has increased to 4.46 crore (4,44,69,799). The national recovery rate has been pegged at 98.81 percent, the health ministry said.

So far, 5,33,316 people have died of Covid-19 and the case fatality rate is 1.19 percent. According to the ministry’s website, 220.67 crore Covid-19 vaccines have been administered in the country so far.

The covid-19 sub-variant JN. 1 in Kerala:

A case of COVID-19 sub-variant JN. 1 was detected in a 79-year-old woman from Kerala as part of the ongoing routine surveillance activity of the Indian SARS-CoV-2 Genomics Consortium (INSACOG), a senior official of the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) said. Saturday (December 16).

ICMR Director General Dr Rajeev Bahl said the case was detected in an RT-PCR positive sample from Karakulam in the southern state’s Thiruvananthapuram district on December 8. The sample tested RT-PCR positive on November 18, he said. The woman had mild symptoms has since recovered from Covid-19.

On Sunday, Kerala Health Minister Veena George said the Covid-19 sub-variant JN.1 detected in the state was not cause for concern. Speaking to the media about the new variant, George said the sub-variant was detected in Indian passengers who were screened at the Singapore airport a month ago.

“No need to worry. This is a sub-form. It was found here. Months ago, this mutation was detected in some Indians who were screened at Singapore airport. Kerala identified the mutation here. No need to worry, the situation is being closely monitored,” he said.
