A court has sentenced a man to life imprisonment for stabbing a young doctor with scissors in Kerala after suddenly attacking her inside a hospital during treatment.

Kerala: A court in Kerala has sentenced a man to life imprisonment for the brutal killing of a young doctor who was attacked with scissors inside a hospital. The shocking incident had created widespread outrage when it occurred.

The Additional District and Sessions Court in Kollam delivered the verdict after examining the case for nearly three years. The accused was found guilty of murdering the doctor and attacking medical staff. However the court rejected the prosecution demand for the death penalty.

The crime took place on May 10 2023 when the accused identified as Sandeep contacted emergency services claiming that his life was in danger. Police reached his residence and later shifted him to a government hospital as he had suffered an injury during a dispute with locals.

While receiving medical treatment the situation suddenly turned violent. As the doctor Vandana Das was treating the injury the accused unexpectedly grabbed a pair of scissors from a tray and attacked her repeatedly. Reports say he stabbed the doctor 27 times during the assault.

The seriously injured doctor was rushed to a private hospital in Thiruvananthapuram for advanced treatment. Despite efforts by medical teams she later succumbed to her injuries.

Police immediately arrested the accused and registered multiple charges including murder and assault on medical personnel. During the investigation the prosecution presented evidence before the court seeking the harshest punishment.

Earlier this month the court declared the accused guilty and on March 21 pronounced the sentence. The court ordered a total of 30 years of imprisonment under various sections and stated that the life imprisonment sentence for the doctor murder would begin after the completion of that period.

The verdict has drawn mixed reactions. While the court confirmed life imprisonment for the accused the victim doctor family and the prosecution expressed dissatisfaction. They stated that they plan to approach a higher court seeking the death penalty for the convict.
