Bihar CM hijab controversy: Giriraj Singh defends Nitish Kumar amid nationwide criticism

Patna : The recent incident involving Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar and a Muslim doctor over a hijab has sparked widespread political debate and criticism. Central Minister Giriraj Singh has defended CM Kumar, stating that the doctor did nothing wrong and that the Chief Minister’s actions were justified under the law.

The controversy erupted when Dr. Nusrat Parveen, one of ten AYUSH doctors, arrived at the Chief Minister’s office in Patna on Monday to receive her appointment letter.

Reports indicate that CM Kumar questioned her about wearing the hijab and asked her to remove it before completing the formalities. The act, caught on camera, triggered outrage, with many alleging that it disrespected religious practices.

Reacting to the global attention and criticism, Giriraj Singh stated that anyone collecting official documents must reveal their face, citing examples like airports and passports. He emphasized that India’s law takes precedence over religious customs in official matters. Singh added that whether Dr. Parveen accepts the appointment or refuses it was entirely her decision.

Bihar Health Minister Mangal Pandey also defended CM Kumar, noting that he had no information that the doctor refused the appointment and highlighting the Chief Minister’s consistent efforts to empower women and respect all communities.

Opposition leaders, however, condemned the statements made by Giriraj Singh. Congress MP Tariq Anwar called the minister’s remarks “insensitive and contemptuous,” criticizing the incident as a violation of religious freedom. People’s Democratic Party leader Iltija Mufti also voiced strong objections, calling Singh’s comments inappropriate.

The incident has intensified debates on secularism, religious freedom, and political interference in bureaucratic procedures. The controversy continues to draw attention from political leaders, media, and human rights advocates nationwide, highlighting the sensitive intersection of religion, politics, and administrative authority in India.
