Myanmar soldier launches bomb attack on Buddhist festival, 40 killed and dozens injured
In a shocking attack in northwestern Myanmar, a soldier parachuted in on a paraglider and dropped a bomb on a local Buddhist festival in the town of Chang U, Sagaing region, at around 7 PM yesterday. The powerful explosion claimed the lives of at least 40 people, while more than 40 others were left injured, many of whom are women, children, and young people.
Local reports indicate that residents from more than 50 families had come together to organize the festival, which coincided with the full moon celebrations, a significant event in the Buddhist calendar. The festival reportedly drew a large crowd, including rebel groups opposed to the country’s military junta, sparking suspicions among military authorities. On receiving reports of the rebels’ presence, senior commanders allegedly directed a soldier to carry out the attack using a paraglider for a surprise airborne assault.
The bomb exploded with devastating force, turning a night of celebration into scenes of chaos and tragedy. Survivors and stunned onlookers rushed the wounded to local hospitals, but officials warn the death toll may rise as several victims remain in critical condition. Reports also suggest another soldier used a paraglider to drop a bomb on a nearby building, but casualty details from that incident are yet to be confirmed.
Myanmar, formerly known as Burma, has been under military rule since 2021, following the establishment of the junta. The country has witnessed frequent clashes between the army and various resistance groups, with the military often resorting to airstrikes and now, apparently, aerial operations by paratroopers.
Since the military takeover, Myanmar has experienced more than 1,700 airstrikes, resulting in nearly 2,000 deaths and over 1,000 injuries. In addition to the loss of life, the attacks have severely damaged infrastructure, with 137 religious buildings, 76 schools, and 28 hospitals affected.
The assault during a religious festival has shocked both local and international communities. Humanitarian organizations have condemned the attack, calling for accountability and swift action to protect civilians. As Myanmar continues to grapple with ongoing violence, this latest tragedy highlights the growing dangers faced by ordinary citizens under military rule.
