When Protectors Become Predators – 124 Police Officials suspended in 10 months for Criminal Activities
Bengaluru: In a shocking development, over the past ten months, 124 police Officials in Bengaluru have been suspended from service for involvement in various criminal activities. These include charges of robbery, corruption, drug trafficking, and dereliction of duty. Among those dismissed are 10 inspectors, 82 constables, and officers from various other ranks.
The scandal has sparked concerns about the integrity of the police force, with allegations that officers entrusted with the law are instead engaging in unlawful activities. In the past, police corruption has been a long-standing issue, but the increasing number of police officers involved in criminal activities in recent months is alarming.
According to information provided by the police, the suspended personnel include 10 inspectors, 16 sub-inspectors, 16 assistant sub-inspectors, 41 head constables, and 41 constables. These individuals were found guilty of various offenses, from participating in robberies to engaging in corrupt practices and selling illicit drugs.
City Police Commissioner Speaks Out
Bengaluru’s Commissioner of Police, Seemant Kumar Singh, stated that strict action was being taken against officers involved in criminal activities and those showing negligence in performing their duties.
He further added that all Joint Commissioners and Deputy Commissioners were instructed to conduct regular meetings within their departments to reinforce awareness about departmental rules and ensure compliance. He emphasized that any officer failing to maintain discipline would face strict consequences.
Singh confirmed that when police officers are found involved in criminal activities, a departmental inquiry is conducted immediately. Based on the severity of the crime, an FIR is lodged, and an investigation is initiated.
The punishment varies depending on the officer’s rank and the nature of the crime, ranging from dismissal, reduction in rank, mandatory leave, or other disciplinary actions. According to sources, nearly 90% of the dismissals were due to dereliction of duty.
Public Trust Eroded
This unprecedented number of dismissals has raised serious questions about the ability of Bengaluru’s police force to protect the public. The core duty of the police is to uphold law and order, yet this scandal reveals deep-rooted issues within the system.
The public, who look to the police as the protectors of law, are now confronted with a situation where many of those in uniform are complicit in criminal activity. The incident highlights the need for stricter monitoring and better accountability within the police department to restore public trust.
