X Introduces New Limits for Free Accounts as Platform Tightens Usage Rules
X has introduced fresh daily limits for free users covering posts messages replies and follows as the company aims to reduce server pressure and improve platform stability during heavy traffic.

Social media platform X has rolled out a new set of restrictions for free and unverified users, bringing major changes to how people use the platform every day. The latest update affects posting limits, direct messages, replies, email changes and account following activity. According to the company, these measures are aimed at reducing technical stress on servers and preventing system slowdowns during periods of high traffic.
The changes are already being applied across mobile apps, web access and third party services connected to X accounts. Users who rely heavily on the platform may now notice restrictions appearing much sooner than before, especially during peak activity hours.
One of the biggest updates involves direct messaging. Free users can now send only a limited number of messages each day. The platform has fixed the cap at 500 direct messages daily. In addition, unverified accounts will be restricted to 50 original posts and 200 replies in a single day. X says these limits are necessary to maintain smooth platform performance and reduce spam like activity.
The company has also introduced a broader posting ceiling. While users can still create up to 2400 total posts in one day, this number will now be divided into smaller time based intervals. This means accounts posting continuously within a short period may temporarily face restrictions even before reaching the overall daily limit.
Another important change applies to account settings. Users can now change their registered email address only four times within one hour. X believes this will help reduce suspicious account activity and improve security monitoring across the platform.
Following limits have also become stricter. Free accounts can now follow a maximum of 400 profiles per day. Once an account crosses the total threshold of 5000 followed profiles, additional restrictions may automatically apply. The company says this move is intended to prevent fake engagement patterns and automated misuse.
The new policy also impacts users connected through external apps and services. X confirmed that API requests made through third party platforms will count toward the overall account limits. This means users linking multiple services to one account could hit their daily cap faster than expected.
The company has warned that limits may become even tighter during periods of unusually heavy traffic. In such cases, users may temporarily receive error messages while trying to post or interact on the platform. However, X clarified that these restrictions are not permanent and most limits will automatically reset after a waiting period.
The update has already sparked discussion among regular users, especially those who depend on the platform for business promotion, public communication and content sharing. While some users see the move as a necessary step to control spam and server load, others believe the tighter restrictions could affect engagement and reduce overall activity on the platform.
With these new rules now in effect, free users on X may need to be more selective about how often they post, reply and interact online.
