The Karnataka government has made a significant cabinet decision to distribute 2 kg of ragi starting this month as part of the flagship Anna Bhagya Yojana.
The Karnataka Food and Civil Supplies Minister, KH Muniyappa, shared several key updates regarding the expansion of the Anna Bhagya scheme and the government’s commitment to supporting both farmers and the poor.
The Karnataka government has made a significant cabinet decision to distribute 2 kg of ragi starting this month as part of the flagship Anna Bhagya Yojana. This initiative aims to align food distribution with the specific regional dietary habits of the population to ensure that essential facilities adequately reach eligible poor families.
Currently, the state supports a massive beneficiary base of 4.01 crore people across 1.14 crore BPL cards. To sustain the Anna Bhagya scheme, the state requires approximately 57,000 metric tonnes of ragi every month.
As part of long-term planning, the government has already procured 5.20 lakh metric tonnes of ragi directly from farmers at support prices, ensuring enough stock to last for the next ten months. Minister Muniyappa emphasized that this initiative reflects a dual commitment to protecting the interests of farmers while ensuring the state’s poor are adequately fed.
Minister KH Muniyappa noted that the government remains committed to the ongoing revision of ration cards to ensure only eligible beneficiaries receive aid. He further confirmed that eligible families can access these new facilities at their nearest fair price shops beginning in May.
