Traveler Alert: NHAI and Reliance Jio starts highway safety mobile alert
Traveler Alert: The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI), which is the Highway Authority in India, has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Reliance Jio to deploy a telecom-based safety alert system across the national highway network.
To strengthen road safety by providing timely information to highway users, enabling them to adjust their speed and driving behavior in advance of hazards. Advance warnings on mobile phones as traveler’s approach identified risk-prone zones.
Identified Risks Include:
Accident-prone stretches
Stray-cattle zones
Fog-affected areas
Emergency diversions
Alerts will be sent through SMS, WhatsApp, and high-priority calls. The automated system will work for all Jio mobile users traveling on or near National Highways. It leverages Jio’s existing 4G and 5G network and telecom towers, meaning quick deployment without the need for additional roadside hardware.
The system will be integrated in a phased manner with NHAI’s digital platforms, including the ‘Rajmargyatra’ mobile application and the emergency helpline number 1033.
NHAI plans to undertake similar collaborations with other telecom service providers to ensure wider coverage for all highway users, regardless of their network. This initiative is currently starting with an initial pilot deployment under select NHAI regional offices.
