Kumara swamy layout renaming sparks major political controversy in Bengaluru

Bengaluru: Major administrative changes within the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) over the past six months, including the formation of the Greater Bengaluru Authority (GBA), have now triggered intense political debate.

While ward boundary restructuring, increase in ward numbers and renaming processes were recently completed, the latest changes announced in the GBA’s final notification have caused significant uproar.

The Urban Development Department issued the final notification on December 1, marking the second major dispute over ward name changes in just one month. Among the most controversial decisions is the renaming of the well-known Kumaraswamy Layout ward.

Located under the Padmanabhanagar Assembly constituency, the ward has now been rechristened as Yarab Nagar, drawing sharp criticism from political parties and sections of the public.

Another major change involves Akash Nagar ward in Yelahanka constituency, which had previously faced allegations of being named after Deputy CM D.K. Shivakumar’s son. The ward has now been renamed Aero City.

Several other wards across East, West, South and Central Bengaluru — including Indiranagar, New Tippasandra, Kalyana Nagar (formerly Kalya Nagar), T.C. Palya (Anandapura), and Medahalli (Basavanapura) — have undergone revisions in both names and boundaries.

The opposition BJP and JD(S) have slammed the Kumaraswamy Layout renaming, calling it an act of appeasement politics by the ruling Congress government. BJP leaders argued that altering the name of a ward associated with “Kumaraswamy,” a divine reference, reflects an anti-Hindu stance by the government.

They questioned whether local residents had requested such a change and accused the ruling party of arbitrarily imposing decisions. BJP further criticised the government through a post on X, stating that if Chief Minister Siddaramaiah and Deputy CM D.K. Shivakumar wish to use names like “Yarab,” they should rename their own residences instead of altering established ward identities. The party demanded immediate reversal of the decision.

Political analysts note that while administrative restructuring is necessary for governance, the pattern of name changes risks deepening political divides. As Bengaluru transitions into a new governance model under the GBA, these renaming decisions have become a flashpoint, sparking widespread debate among citizens, leaders and civic groups.
