Bengaluru : Karnataka MLA Basanagouda R. Patil Yatnal has written to Union Home Minister Amit Shah, urging the central government to immediately ban agencies that issue Halal certification.
In his letter, Yatnal expressed concerns that money collected through Halal certification is being misused. He referred to the example of Uttar Pradesh, where such agencies have already been prohibited, and stressed that similar action should be implemented nationwide to safeguard national interests.
Concerns Over Misuse of Halal Funds
The MLA highlighted that several Islamic organizations, under the guise of religious institutions, are promoting Halal certification for meat, food products, cosmetics, and other consumer goods. Notable agencies mentioned include Halal India, Global Islamic Sharia, and Jamiat Ulama-i-Hind Halal Trust.
Yatnal stated, โHalal certification violates the Indian Constitution. There is evidence that the funds collected through these certifications are being diverted for anti-national activities, terrorism, extremist propaganda, and the promotion of jihad.
Hundreds of crores of rupees are being collected via Halal certification. While government agencies such as FSSAI already ensure food safety and quality, the necessity of multiple private agencies issuing Halal certificates in India is questionable.โ
Legal and Constitutional Implications
The MLA emphasized that Halal certification falls under Sharia law, which holds no legal validity in India. โIssuing Halal certificates in India is illegal and must be banned immediately.
The misuse of funds collected and the malicious intent of these agencies must be seriously considered,โ he wrote, citing the action taken by the Uttar Pradesh government as a precedent. Yatnal has called for a nationwide prohibition on all Halal certification agencies to prevent misuse and protect public safety and constitutional rights.
