The India Meteorological Department (IMD) said that a low-pressure area has formed over the east-central Bay of Bengal, and its impact is expected to intensify rainfall across Karnataka, particularly along the coastal region. In view of the forecast, authorities have issued Red and Orange Alerts for several districts.
Red Alert for Three Coastal Districts:
The IMD has issued a Red Alert for Uttara Kannada, Dakshina Kannada, and Udupi districts, warning of very heavy to extremely heavy rainfall until July 8. An Orange Alert has been issued for Belagavi, Dharwad, Kodagu, Chikkamagaluru, and Shivamogga, where heavy rainfall is also expected over the next few days.
The weather department has forecast light to moderate rainfall in Bengaluru and other districts of South Interior Karnataka. Several parts of the state are expected to receive rain over the next two to three days.
The southwest monsoon is likely to strengthen further this month, bringing widespread rainfall across coastal Karnataka and South Interior Karnataka. Heavy showers have already been reported in Belagavi, Dharwad, and Haveri districts.
Many parts of Karnataka have received good rainfall in recent days. Bengaluru has been witnessing cool and pleasant weather for the past three days, and more rain is likely by tonight, according to the weather department.
Heavy rain accompanied by strong winds has lashed the Karwar–Ankola region of Uttara Kannada district. In Harawada village of Ankola taluk, powerful sea waves have intensified coastal erosion, reaching the courtyards of houses located along the shoreline.
Fearing that the houses could be washed away, residents have evacuated their homes. Local Gram Panchayat officials are camping in the area and have shifted the families of Satish Harikantra and Sumitra Harikantra to safer locations as a precautionary measure.
