Hindus clean temple with Gomutra in Kalaburagi amid decoration row

Kalaburagi: Hindu activists cleaned the Ramatirtha Shiva Temple with Gomutra on Monday, protesting against floral decorations carried out by Muslim youths during Mahashivaratri. The act of “purification,” as described by the protesters, has intensified communal tensions in Kalaburagi.
The controversy began after videos circulated online showing Muslim flower traders decorating the temple premises and Shivling on Sunday. Angered by this, members of Hindu Jagruti Sena assembled at the temple, sprinkled cow urine across the complex and conducted special prayers, asserting that the sanctity of the shrine needed restoration.
Protesters criticised the temple trust, questioning why Muslim traders were allowed to perform decoration work at the ancient temple. They claimed the decision disregarded religious customs and hurt Hindu sentiments.
Temple sources, however, maintained that Muslim flower vendors have been engaged in decoration work during Mahashivaratri for several years. “There has never been any objection in the past. The controversy arose only after the video became viral,” a temple-associated source said.
Police presence was increased around the temple to maintain law and order. Officials urged people not to spread inflammatory content on social media and assured that preventive measures were in place.
The development follows recent religious disputes in the district, including controversies linked to shrines in Aland. Observers note that while the decoration itself was part of festive arrangements, the reaction underscores heightened communal sensitivities.
Authorities continue to monitor the situation to ensure peace and prevent further escalation.
