Heavy Rainfall alert in Karnataka for next 48–72 hours
Issued for heavy rainfall (64.5 mm to 115.5 mm) in coastal and hilly districts, particularly for May 7.
Heavy Rainfall Alert: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued alerts for several parts of Karnataka as pre-monsoon showers intensify. Following a period of intense heat, widespread rain and thunderstorms are expected across the state through May 10, 2026.
Rainfall Alerts in these places:
Yellow Alert: Issued for heavy rainfall (64.5 mm to 115.5 mm) in coastal and hilly districts, particularly for May 7.
Heavy Rain Warning: Specific districts under watch include Mysuru, Chamarajanagar, Kodagu, Shivamogga, Chikkamagaluru, and Hassan. These areas are likely to see the most intense showers over the next 48–72 hours.
Thunderstorm & Gusty Winds: Most of South Interior Karnataka, including Bengaluru, is expected to experience thunderstorms with wind speeds reaching 30–50 kmph, primarily during evening and night hours.
Region Expected Weather (Next 3–4 Days):
South Interior: Heavy rain in Chamarajanagar, Mysuru, and Kodagu. Bengaluru to see moderate rain/thundershowers.
Coastal Thunderstorms and lightning expected in Dakshina Kannada, Udupi, and Uttara Kannada.
North Interior: Light to moderate rain in Belagavi, Dharwad, Gadag, and Haveri; heat continues in Raichur and Kalaburagi.
These rains are providing much-needed relief from the recent heatwave, where temperatures in northern districts like Raichur crossed 42°C. In urban areas like Bengaluru, expect waterlogging in low-lying areas and traffic disruptions during evening downpours.
While beneficial for many farmers, the gusty winds and occasional hailstorms (previously seen in early May) can pose a risk to standing crops. The weather is expected to remain unstable until at least May 12, as a trough system persists over the region. Residents are advised to keep an eye on local updates before traveling through ghat sections or low-lying areas.
