Government Stands With Drought Hit Farmers Says DK Shivakumar

Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar has assured farmers facing drought conditions that the government will stand by them and take steps to reduce the impact of inadequate rainfall on agriculture.

Shivakumar visited agricultural fields in Hunagund taluk of Bagalkot district and interacted with farmers about the difficulties they are currently facing. He later shared a video of the visit on social media, saying that the government was with farmers during the difficult period.

The Deputy Chief Minister said the government would not leave farmers to deal with the situation alone even when rainfall has failed to meet expectations. He stressed that protecting farmers is important for the wider wellbeing of the state.

The government has also launched a cloud seeding programme at a cost of Rs 28.52 crore, with the stated objective of improving rainfall conditions and helping protect standing crops in areas affected by insufficient rain.

Shivakumar said steps were also being taken to ensure that farmers who have suffered crop losses receive insurance compensation without unnecessary delay. Insurance companies have been directed to release eligible compensation quickly, according to his statement.

The government is also considering several measures aimed at reducing the financial pressure on farmers in drought affected regions. These include stopping loan recovery from farmers in areas officially affected by drought.

Another major focus is faster processing of crop insurance claims. Farmers who have already suffered losses due to poor rainfall are expected to benefit if compensation is released without prolonged delays.

The government has also decided to seek assistance for rural agricultural workers who may be facing financial difficulties because farming activity has been affected. A proposal seeking urgent support from the central government for crop loss compensation is also being prepared.

The situation has created concern among farmers in parts of Karnataka where rainfall has not been sufficient for agricultural needs. For many farming families, the outcome of the current season is closely connected to household income and their ability to manage existing financial commitments.

During his interaction with farmers in Hunagund, Shivakumar listened to their concerns and sought to reassure them that government agencies would continue working on relief measures. His message was that farmers should not lose confidence because of the current difficulties.

The state government is relying on several measures rather than a single intervention. Cloud seeding is being attempted to support rainfall, while insurance compensation and possible financial assistance are being considered to address the immediate economic impact of crop losses.

Shivakumar said the government would remain behind farmers at every stage of the crisis. He also urged farmers not to become discouraged by the current situation and assured them that efforts were being made to provide support.

The effectiveness of these measures will depend on rainfall conditions, implementation on the ground and the speed at which eligible farmers receive financial assistance. Farmers are now watching closely for further action from both the state and central governments.
