Four of a family drown in Tungabhadra river near Raichur

Raichur : In a tragic incident, four members of a single family drowned while bathing in the Tungabhadra River near Kurdi village in Manvi taluk of Raichur district on Thursday afternoon.

The deceased have been identified as Umavathi (35), Ratna (24), Mahesh (28) and Shivananda (24), all residents of Kurdi village.According to police sources, the victims had travelled to the riverbank near Satunuru village, located at the tail-end of the Rajolibanda dam in neighbouring Andhra Pradesh’s Kosgi region, for a routine bath. However, tragedy struck when they reportedly ventured into a low-lying stretch of the river and got trapped in deep waters.

A local police officer said, “Prima facie, it appears that the victims entered a deceptively shallow area which suddenly drops in depth. They were unable to swim back and drowned before help could reach.”

The incident occurred within the jurisdiction of Kosgi police station in Andhra Pradesh. Upon receiving information, police and rescue teams rushed to the spot and retrieved the bodies after a search operation.

Another official confirmed, “All four bodies have been recovered and shifted to Kosgi Government Hospital for postmortem examination. Further investigation is underway to ascertain the exact sequence of events.”

Family members and villagers were inconsolable as news of the tragedy spread in Kurdi village. Authorities have urged the public to exercise caution while entering rivers, especially in unfamiliar or uneven terrains where water levels can change abruptly.
