Maddur Auto Stand Dispute Deepens Political Clash

A dispute over an autorickshaw stand in Maddur has added another chapter to the political differences between Union Minister H D Kumaraswamy and Congress MLA Kadaluru Uday. What began as a disagreement over the location and permissions for a public facility has now turned into a wider exchange of allegations between the two sides.

The proposed auto stand was planned opposite the Maddur bus stand using corporate social responsibility funds. Kumaraswamy had performed the foundation ceremony for the project, but municipal officials stopped the work after raising objections over the proposed location and the absence of required permissions.

The civic authorities also seized construction materials brought to the site. Officials reportedly objected to construction activity on a pedestrian pathway and raised concerns about possible obstruction to public movement.

The matter was discussed earlier at a DISHA meeting, where Kumaraswamy questioned officials about the delay. With the construction still not moving forward, he later held a video conference with officials from Delhi and sought an explanation for the continued stoppage.

During the interaction, Kumaraswamy reportedly questioned whether officials were being influenced by the local political leadership. He also objected to suggestions that the auto stand should be shifted to another location, saying that auto drivers had requested the original site.

The Union Minister has argued that development work should not be affected by political considerations. His latest intervention has once again brought the differences between him and the Congress leadership in Mandya into public view.

MLA Kadaluru Uday, however, has defended the municipal action. According to him, the authorities were right to stop construction because the proposed structure was being built along a footpath and roadside area without the necessary permissions.

Uday has also said that the municipality, police and KSRTC authorities had concerns about the impact of the proposed stand on public movement. From his perspective, providing an auto stand is necessary, but the facility should be constructed at a location that does not create problems for pedestrians or traffic.

The MLA has proposed providing an alternative location for the autorickshaw stand. He has also appealed for the issue not to be turned into a political dispute, saying that a practical solution can be found for the drivers while protecting public access.

The disagreement has nevertheless taken a political turn. Uday also questioned Kumaraswamy about his contribution to Maddur and said that development works worth around Rs 2,000 crore had been facilitated in the constituency during his tenure.

The latest controversy comes against the backdrop of continuing political exchanges between Kumaraswamy and Congress leaders in Mandya. Development projects in the district have increasingly become part of the arguments between leaders from the ruling party and the BJP and JD S alliance.

For the autorickshaw drivers, however, the immediate issue is more straightforward. They need a designated place where vehicles can wait without creating problems for pedestrians, buses or other road users.

The disagreement over the location has therefore brought several practical questions into focus. The authorities have to consider the availability of land, pedestrian movement, traffic conditions and the required permissions before construction can proceed.

The dispute also highlights how even a relatively small civic project can become politically sensitive when senior leaders are directly involved. The auto stand was initially presented as a local infrastructure project, but the disagreement over its implementation has now drawn attention beyond Maddur.

The next step is expected to depend on the decision regarding the location and the necessary approvals. If an alternative site is accepted, the project could move forward without affecting pedestrian movement at the disputed location.

For now, Kumaraswamy continues to question the delay, while Uday is defending the municipal decision and supporting an alternative arrangement. The two sides have offered different explanations for why the project has stalled.

The controversy has left the final location of the Maddur auto stand unresolved. Whether the original site is reconsidered or an alternative location is selected will depend on the authorities and the discussions involving local officials and stakeholders.
