Congress MLA Nayana Motamma calls out obscene comments on social media, condemns misogyny and online abuse

Bengaluru :After actress Ramya and actor Darshan’s wife Vijayalakshmi recently took a strong stand against obscene messages on social media, Congress MLA Nayana Motamma has now spoken out against similar harassment directed at her. The Mudigere legislator has alleged that she was subjected to abusive and derogatory comments, including being called a “prostitute”, on her personal Instagram account.

According to Nayana Motamma, miscreants posted obscene comments on her clothing under a post shared from her personal Instagram handle, which she uses to share private moments and travel experiences. The MLA maintains two separate Instagram accounts — one for political updates and public communication, and another for personal posts. It was on the personal account that the abusive comments appeared.

Expressing deep anguish over the incident, Nayana Motamma said the comments reflect a deeply entrenched misogynistic mindset. She shared a post highlighting how women in public life are frequently judged and attacked for their appearance rather than their work. “I strongly oppose this anti-women mentality. If a woman wears sleeveless clothes, she is labelled as an incompetent politician. Some even stoop to calling her a prostitute,” she wrote.

The MLA further pointed out that many such comments come from anonymous profiles without display pictures. “They hide behind fake accounts and spew venom. Perhaps one day I will confront them face to face,” she added, making it clear that she will not remain silent in the face of online abuse.

The issue has once again sparked a wider debate on the safety of women on social media platforms and the increasing trend of targeting women politicians, actors and public figures with obscene and abusive language. Many netizens and supporters have rallied behind Nayana Motamma, demanding stricter action against online harassment and better accountability from social media companies.

The incident also comes amid growing public outrage over the use of obscene language in public spaces. In a separate development, a controversial notice containing vulgar words, reportedly put up by the Koppal City Municipality near Padaki Layout, triggered sharp criticism from residents. Locals objected to the use of offensive language on a public signboard warning against littering, especially in areas frequented by women and children. Citizens have demanded immediate action and accountability from municipal authorities.

Together, these incidents underline a broader concern over the normalization of abusive language — both online and offline — and the urgent need for authorities to enforce standards of decency and respect in public discourse.
