Ajit Naik murder case: Key accused convicted after eight years, sentencing on January 13
Karwar: In a major development that brings closure to one of Uttara Kannada district’s most high-profile crime cases, the Yellapur Mobile Court has convicted the prime accused in the brutal murder of senior advocate and activist Ajit Naik, eight years after the crime shook the entire state.
The court held Panduranga Maruti Kambale, the first accused in the case, guilty of murder, while acquitting four other accused due to lack of sufficient evidence. The verdict was pronounced by Judge Kiran Kini, who stated that the prosecution had successfully established the guilt of the prime accused through a combination of strong circumstantial and scientific evidence.
The court observed that the chain of events presented by the prosecution clearly pointed to Panduranga’s involvement in the murder, leaving no reasonable doubt. While delivering the judgment, the court clarified that the quantum of punishment would be decided separately.
As per the order, the final sentencing will be pronounced on January 13 at the Sirsi District Sessions Court. The court will then determine whether the convicted accused deserves life imprisonment or the death penalty, considering the gravity and brutality of the offence.
Brutal murder that shocked Dandeli:
The case relates to the gruesome murder of Ajit Naik, which took place on July 26, 2018, in Dandeli town. Ajit Naik, a senior lawyer, social activist, and president of the Dandeli Taluk Struggle Committee, was hacked to death with a machete in broad daylight. The murder was reportedly carried out due to deep-rooted enmity arising from a land dispute.
The killing was described as one of the most violent crimes in Dandeli’s history and had triggered widespread outrage, protests, and demands for justice across the district. Naik was attacked near his office, sending shockwaves through the legal fraternity and civil society.
Investigation and prosecution:
The investigation was conducted by CPI Anees Mujawar, who filed the charge sheet after an extensive probe. Assistant Investigating Officer P.C. Manjunath H. Shetty also played a key role in gathering evidence.
The prosecution was led by Public Prosecutor Rajesh Malagekar, who presented the case effectively, relying on forensic reports, witness testimonies, and circumstantial evidence to establish the motive and execution of the crime.
The court accepted the prosecution’s argument that the murder was premeditated and carried out to eliminate Ajit Naik, who posed a major obstacle to vested interests in an ongoing land dispute.
Land mafia angle exposed:
During the investigation, it emerged that the murder was allegedly orchestrated by land mafia elements. Ajit Naik had been legally representing the rightful landowners and was known for taking a firm stand against illegal land encroachments.
Investigators revealed that the accused feared losing control over disputed land as long as Naik continued his legal battle, which ultimately led to the conspiracy to eliminate him.
A public figure and people’s leader:
Ajit Naik was not just a lawyer but a widely respected public figure in Dandeli. A committed activist from his student days, he played a pivotal role in the long-standing movement to declare Dandeli a taluk.
As president of the Dandeli Taluk Struggle Committee, he led the famous “Dandeli Bachao Andolan” and staged a 45-day protest demanding the establishment of a Dandeli court, earning recognition across Karnataka.
He also served as president and member of the Dandeli City Municipal Council and was active in politics. Naik contested the 2008 Assembly elections on a Samajwadi Party ticket and had associations with both the JD(S) and the Congress. He was mentored by leaders such as Margaret Alva and former Chief Minister Bangarappa.
Awaiting final justice:
With the conviction of the prime accused, many in Dandeli believe that justice has finally prevailed after a long legal battle. However, all eyes are now on January 13, when the court will announce the final sentence, a decision that is expected to have far-reaching implications and bring a sense of closure to Ajit Naik’s family and supporters.
