State-owned ‘QatarEnergy’ has officially confirmed that the blast occurred just as work was starting at the Barzan plant, which plays a vital role in meeting the country’s energy needs. An intensive search is underway amidst the debris for the 18 people who went missing due to the intensity of the explosion.

Officials have not yet revealed the exact cause of the blast. A high-level investigation has been launched to determine whether a technical fault or another factor led to the disaster.

Qatar had recently cut its gas production due to the diplomatic crisis in the Strait of Hormuz. This tragedy has struck just as the situation was easing and returning to normal. Financial analysts have expressed concern that if this major plant in Qatar—the world’s largest gas supplier—remains shut down for a long period, it could disrupt global energy supplies and lead to a further spike in gas and oil prices.
