Boat tragedy in narmada: 9 dead, viral ‘mother-child’ image found fake

Jabalpur: A tragic boat accident at the Bargi Dam on the Narmada River has claimed at least nine lives, while four persons remain missing. The incident occurred on April 30 evening, sending shockwaves across Madhya Pradesh.

According to officials, the boat carrying 41 tourists capsized in the backwaters of the dam. While 28 people were rescued in a swift response by local authorities and rescue teams, nine were confirmed dead. Search operations are still underway to trace the four missing individuals, including three children.

Rescue efforts have intensified with teams of divers, disaster response personnel, and security forces scanning a 5-kilometre radius in the reservoir area. Police officials stated that all available resources have been deployed to locate the missing persons at the earliest.

Meanwhile, several videos and images related to the tragedy have gone viral on social media, including a heart-wrenching image purportedly showing a mother and child embracing each other in death. The image triggered widespread emotional reactions online.

However, authorities have now clarified that the viral image is fake. The District Collector of Jabalpur confirmed via social media that the widely circulated picture was generated using artificial intelligence and does not depict a real incident from the tragedy.

A diver involved in the rescue operation had earlier mentioned witnessing a similar emotional moment, which added to the confusion and led to the spread of misinformation online. Officials have urged the public to refrain from sharing unverified content.

Preliminary reports suggest that safety lapses may have contributed to the accident, though a detailed investigation is underway to ascertain the exact cause of the mishap.

The incident has once again raised serious concerns over tourist safety and adherence to guidelines at popular water bodies.
