Soldier ends life over unpaid home loan burden in Hunsur
Mysuru: In a tragic incident that has left the community in deep sorrow, a 35-year-old soldier ended his life in Hunsur, Mysuru district, unable to bear the burden of mounting debt. The deceased has been identified as M. Chandrashekar, a soldier with the Parachute Regiment stationed in R.T. Nagar, Bengaluru.
According to police sources, Chandrashekar had built a new house two years ago in the Hosabadanavara locality of Hunsur. To finance the construction, he had borrowed money from a bank and also taken loans from friends. Struggling to repay the accumulated debt, he reportedly slipped into depression.
Chandrashekar had served the Indian Army for over 15 years, carrying out duties in sensitive regions including Jammu and Kashmir, Agra, and along the China border. He had recently come home on leave and was scheduled to rejoin duty after Diwali. However, the stress of unpaid loans and financial pressure allegedly pushed him to take the extreme step.
On Sunday, family members found him hanging at his residence. Though he was rushed to a nearby hospital, doctors declared him brought dead. The incident has sent shockwaves across the locality, as neighbours recall him as a disciplined and kind-hearted soldier who had proudly served the nation.
His untimely death has cast a pall of gloom over his family’s festive celebrations, turning their Diwali into a period of unbearable grief. Relatives and local residents have urged the government to provide financial assistance and ensure timely support for soldiers and ex-servicemen facing personal hardships.
A case has been registered at the Hunsur police station, and further investigation is underway. The body has been handed over to the family after post-mortem formalities.
