Man smuggling 390 kg tobacco drags cop on car bonnet near Bengaluru; accused arrested
According to the police, the incident took place near the Karnataka–Tamil Nadu border at the Jujuwadi checkpost on Sunday.
Bengaluru: A shocking incident was reported on the Bengaluru–Hosur highway where a man allegedly transporting banned tobacco products dragged a police constable on the bonnet of his car while attempting to escape from a checkpoint. The dramatic incident, captured on camera, has now gone viral on social media.
According to the police, the incident took place near the Karnataka–Tamil Nadu border at the Jujuwadi checkpost on Sunday. Officers were conducting routine vehicle inspections when they stopped a luxury car suspected of carrying illegal goods.
The accused, identified as Yarab Pasha (34), was allegedly transporting banned tobacco products along with liquor bottles illegally. When police began inspecting the vehicle, they discovered large quantities of tobacco and attempted to detain the driver.
At that moment, the accused reportedly tried to escape. A head constable identified as Rajeev attempted to stop the vehicle by holding onto the bonnet of the car. However, instead of stopping, the driver accelerated the vehicle and drove away with the policeman still clinging to the bonnet.
Police said the accused drove for nearly 500 metres while the constable remained on the bonnet, creating panic among motorists travelling along the busy highway.
“This was an extremely dangerous act. The accused tried to flee despite a police officer attempting to stop the vehicle,” a police official said.
The entire incident was recorded on the dash camera of another vehicle travelling on the same road, and the video has since been widely shared online.
Fortunately, the constable escaped the ordeal without suffering serious injuries. Police teams immediately launched a search operation and managed to intercept the vehicle after a brief chase. The accused, Yarab Pasha, was taken into custody and the car was seized for further investigation.
During inspection of the vehicle, police recovered around 390 kg of banned gutka and tobacco products along with liquor bottles allegedly brought from Karnataka. The total value of the seized materials is estimated to be around ₹2.2 lakh.
Police officials said strict action would be taken against the accused under relevant sections for smuggling banned substances and endangering the life of a police officer.
The incident has raised concerns about illegal transportation of tobacco products across the state border and the risks faced by police personnel during enforcement operations.
