Ahmedabad: The Gujarat Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS) on Sunday arrested three suspected terrorists from Ahmedabad for allegedly planning large-scale terror attacks across India and supplying illegal arms. The operation marks another significant success for the ATS in its ongoing crackdown on radical networks operating across the country.
According to officials, the three suspects had been under surveillance for nearly a year. Acting on specific intelligence, the ATS teams apprehended them while they were in the process of supplying weapons intended for future terror operations.
βThe suspects were planning to execute coordinated terror strikes in different parts of the country. They were taken into custody before they could carry out their plan,β said a statement from the Gujarat ATS.
The arrests have revealed a larger conspiracy involving arms smuggling and terror funding channels with suspected links abroad. Officials have not yet disclosed the names of the arrested individuals, as investigations and interrogations are still in progress. βFurther details will be made public once the preliminary investigation is complete,β an ATS spokesperson added.
This latest operation follows a similar action earlier this year, when the Gujarat ATS arrested five Al-Qaeda-linked suspects β including a woman from Bengaluru β for allegedly coordinating online terror activities with handlers based in Pakistan. The woman, identified as 30-year-old Sama Parveen, was accused of maintaining contact with Al-Qaeda operatives through encrypted communication platforms and assisting in recruitment and propaganda efforts.
Gujarat ATS Deputy Director General Sunil Joshi confirmed that the three new arrests are part of a continuing effort to dismantle terror modules with pan-India reach. βAfter the Bengaluru arrest earlier this year, our teams have been closely monitoring digital communications and suspicious movements. This operation is an extension of those efforts,β he said.
Preliminary reports suggest that the detained suspects were attempting to expand their network and distribute weapons to sleeper cells operating in western and southern India. The ATS is now investigating whether the trio had any direct or indirect links to international terror groups or previously busted modules.
The ATS has reportedly seized several incriminating items, including mobile phones, electronic gadgets, and documents related to the procurement of arms. Forensic experts are analysing the digital evidence to trace funding and communication trails that could lead to more arrests in the coming days.
