Karwar: In an unusual and tragic incident, a young fisherman lost his life after being fatally injured by a fish that jumped into his boat and pierced his stomach in Karwar, Karnataka.
The deceased has been identified as Akshay Anil Majalikar (24), a resident of Dandebhag in Majali village of Karwar taluk. According to sources, Akshay had gone fishing on Tuesday (October 14) as part of his daily routine when the freak accident occurred.
While fishing in the sea, a fish measuring around 8 to 10 inches suddenly jumped out of the water and landed directly on Akshay’s abdomen, stabbing him with its sharp snout or fin. The unexpected impact caused a deep puncture wound, leaving him severely injured.
His fellow fishermen immediately rushed him to Karwar’s KRIMS Hospital, where doctors treated the injury, stitched the wound, and discharged him after initial care. However, Akshay reportedly continued to experience severe abdominal pain even after returning home.
On Wednesday (October 15), his condition worsened, prompting his family to readmit him to the hospital. Despite the doctors’ efforts, Akshay succumbed to his injuries on Thursday (October 16).
The incident has left the local fishing community in shock, as such accidents are extremely rare. Locals said Akshay was an experienced fisherman and had been going to sea from a young age. His sudden and bizarre death has cast a pall of gloom over Majali village.
Preliminary medical reports suggest that internal infection or organ damage caused by the fish’s sharp snout might have led to complications resulting in his death. Police have registered a case of unnatural death and are awaiting a detailed post-mortem report to confirm the exact cause.
Meanwhile, fellow fishermen have expressed concern about increasing risks at sea and urged authorities to raise awareness about safety measures during fishing activities.
