Controversy erupts over alleged mockery of daiva tradition in Madikeri

Madikeri : A video that surfaced from Emmemadu village in Madikeri taluk has triggered a major controversy, raising concerns over the alleged disrespect towards traditional Daiva worship practices of the coastal and Kodagu regions. The incident reportedly took place on the eve of a Muslim youth’s wedding, where the groom was seen wearing leaves, painting his face, and dancing while holding a stick—behaviour that has drawn sharp criticism from sections of the community.

The video, which has gone viral on social media, shows the young man covering his body with leaves and banana stems, with his face painted and engaging in what appears to mimic a ritualistic performance. This has led to allegations that the act resembles Daiva Narthana, a sacred ritual deeply rooted in the cultural and spiritual traditions of Tulu Nadu and Kodagu.

Local organisations and religious groups have expressed strong objections, stating that the act amounts to disrespect and mockery of revered deities such as Koragajja, Panjurli, and Pashanamoorthi, among several others worshipped in the region. The incident has reportedly hurt the sentiments of devotees who follow these traditions with deep faith and reverence.

The Kodagu District Daiva Narthaka and Daiva Aradhaka Association has filed a written complaint with the Superintendent of Police, demanding strict legal action against those involved. The association has condemned the act, alleging that the behaviour seen in the video is not only offensive but also violates the sanctity of long-standing cultural practices.

According to the complaint, the act of mimicking Daiva rituals, including applying face paint and enacting a symbolic performance, is an insult to the belief system followed by the community for generations. The association emphasized that Daiva worship is not merely a cultural performance but a sacred tradition passed down through ancestral lineage.

The controversy has sparked heated discussions in the region, which has otherwise remained relatively peaceful. Residents and community leaders have expressed concern over the growing trend of such incidents, calling for responsible behaviour, especially in a culturally sensitive area like Kodagu.

Authorities are expected to look into the matter and assess whether any legal provisions have been violated. Meanwhile, the incident continues to generate debate on the boundaries between cultural expression and religious sensitivity.
