Bengaluru woman alleges marriage fraud and forced conversion, files police complaint
Bengaluru: A fresh case of alleged marriage fraud and religious conversion has come to light in Bengaluru, where a young woman has accused her husband of cheating her after luring her into a relationship and converting her to Islam.
According to the complaint filed with the High Grounds Police Station, the accused has been identified as Syed Imtiyaz, a resident of BTM Layout in Bengaluru. The victim, originally from Kolkata and belonging to a Brahmin family, stated that she came in contact with Imtiyaz through social media.
In her complaint, the woman alleged that Imtiyaz befriended her online and gradually convinced her that he wanted to marry her. Trusting his assurances, she agreed to the relationship. She further claimed that he persuaded her to convert to Islam before marriage and changed her name to βZainab.β
The couple got married through a registered marriage on July 18, 2025. After the wedding, they moved to Kolkata and began living together. During this period, the woman gave birth to a baby girl.
However, soon after the child was born, the complainant alleged that Imtiyaz abandoned her and disappeared without any information. Left helpless with an infant, the woman returned to Bengaluru and approached the police seeking help.
In her police complaint, she accused Imtiyaz of cheating, emotional exploitation and abandoning her after trapping her in the name of marriage. She has urged the police to trace her husband and take strict legal action against him.
Based on her statement, High Grounds police have registered a case and begun an investigation. Officers said efforts are underway to locate the accused and verify the claims made by the woman.
βThis appears to be a case of alleged cheating and abandonment. We have taken the complaint seriously and are trying to track down the accused. Further action will be taken based on evidence,β a senior police officer said.
The incident has once again raised concerns about cases where women allege deception in the name of love and marriage. Police have appealed to the public, especially youngsters, to exercise caution while forming relationships through social media platforms.
Further investigation into the matter is currently in progress.
