Smart ticketing push: BMTC to introduce new ETM machines with dynamic QR codes

Bengaluru ;Taking a firm stand against ticketing irregularities, the Bangalore Metropolitan Transport Corporation is gearing up to implement a new digital ticketing system powered by Dynamic QR Code-enabled Electronic Ticketing Machines (ETMs). The move aims to plug revenue leakages caused by fraudulent UPI transactions and bring greater accountability within the system.
Public buses operated by BMTC in Bengaluru are a lifeline for lakhs of daily commuters. However, recent incidents of conductors using personal QR codes to collect fares had raised alarm within the department. Passengers unknowingly paid fares to private accounts, receiving either invalid or no tickets, prompting the need for a robust technological intervention.
Under the new system, passengers will be required to scan a Dynamic QR code generated on the ETM itself. Tickets will be issued only after successful payment confirmation through the official system, eliminating the scope for manual interference or fraud. Authorities have also decided to remove all previously installed static QR codes from buses to avoid confusion.
The ambitious project, costing approximately ₹40 crore, has been entrusted to Chalo. The company is currently conducting pilot runs with around 400 ETMs across multiple routes, including services linked to the Yeshwanthpur depot. Officials confirmed that the trial phase is nearing completion and has largely been successful.
BMTC plans to roll out these ETMs across its fleet of over 6,000 buses by the end of May. In addition to QR-based payments, the machines will offer multiple digital payment options such as debit and credit cards, along with NCMC integration, ensuring seamless transactions for passengers.
Senior officials noted that the introduction of smart ETMs is not just about curbing fraud but also about modernizing the overall ticketing experience. Faster ticket generation, reduced cash handling, and improved transparency are expected to benefit both commuters and the corporation.
With final adjustments underway, BMTC is optimistic about implementing the system across all buses by next month-end, ushering in a new era of secure and efficient public transport in Bengaluru.
