Moral policing incident in Bengaluru sparks outrage after video goes viral

Bengaluru: An alleged case of moral policing in Bengaluru has triggered outrage after a video surfaced showing a group of youths confronting a Muslim woman who was walking with a Hindu man on a public road. The incident has sparked debate on social media about personal freedom and the growing instances of moral policing in urban spaces.
According to information shared online, the woman was walking with her Hindu friend when a group of young men stopped them and began questioning them about their presence together. The youths reportedly interrogated the pair and demanded an explanation about their relationship.
In the video that has gone viral, the group can be seen stopping the couple and asking them why they were together. The youths are heard telling the woman that the man accompanying her was Hindu and questioning why she was with him. The confrontation reportedly continued for several minutes before the pair managed to leave the spot.
The video has since been widely shared across various social media platforms, drawing sharp criticism from citizens, activists and commentators who described the act as an example of moral policing.
Many social media users expressed concern that such incidents represent an intrusion into the personal lives of individuals and reflect intolerance toward interfaith friendships or relationships.
Social activists have strongly condemned the incident, stating that no group has the right to question or interfere in the personal choices of consenting adults. They emphasised that in a democratic society, people are free to interact with friends or acquaintances irrespective of religion or background.
Activists also stressed that speaking with someone, walking together or spending time in public places is part of a person’s fundamental freedoms. They warned that harassment based on religion or personal relationships could threaten social harmony.
Several citizens have urged authorities to take legal action against those involved and to send a clear message that intimidation or harassment in the name of moral policing will not be tolerated.
