Temple Funds Dispute Triggers Violent Clash Between Two Groups in Bagalkot Village
A dispute over temple accounts and alleged missing funds turned violent in Bagalkot leaving several injured raising concerns about festival preparations and prompting demands for a thorough police investigation.

A long standing dispute over the management of a famous temple in Karnataka’s Bagalkot district has erupted into violence, leaving several people injured and creating tension in the region ahead of an important religious festival. The clash reportedly stemmed from disagreements over temple accounts, allegations regarding valuable assets, and an old rivalry between two local groups.
The incident took place at the Durga Devi Temple in Gaddanakere Tanda, a well known place of worship that attracts thousands of devotees during its grand festival held once every three years. With only a few months remaining for the next celebration, the temple has become the center of controversy after questions were raised over its financial records and valuable ornaments.
According to local sources, two rival groups became involved in a heated argument that quickly escalated into physical violence. Members of both sides allegedly attacked each other using rods and axes, resulting in multiple injuries. The incident has shocked residents who expected the village to be preparing peacefully for the upcoming temple festival rather than witnessing such a serious confrontation.
The disagreement is said to have revolved around demands for transparency in the management of temple wealth. Allegations surfaced regarding the accounting of nearly three crore rupees and around five kilograms of gold associated with the temple. These claims have intensified the dispute, although the actual facts regarding the assets are yet to be officially established through investigation.
Police said that both groups have presented different versions of the incident. Each side has accused the other of provoking the violence and carrying out the assault. Investigators are now collecting statements from witnesses and examining evidence to determine how the confrontation unfolded and who initiated the attack.
Residents said tensions had been building for some time because of disagreements over the administration of temple affairs. The issue reportedly became more sensitive as preparations for the upcoming religious fair gathered pace. Since the festival attracts a large number of devotees from nearby villages and districts, any conflict related to temple management has wider social significance.
Reports indicate that the dispute first intensified when one group questioned the financial records of the temple and sought clarification regarding its assets. The discussion reportedly led to arguments between supporters of both sides. Although the matter appeared to calm temporarily, tensions remained unresolved.
On the following day, members of the rival groups reportedly encountered each other again near the temple premises. A verbal exchange soon escalated into a violent clash. Eyewitnesses claimed that weapons such as iron rods and axes were used during the fight, causing panic among local residents and devotees present nearby.
Several people sustained injuries during the incident. Those hurt were immediately shifted to hospitals in Bagalkot for treatment. Some victims received medical care at the district hospital, while others were admitted to private hospitals depending on the seriousness of their injuries.
Among those injured, Bhojappa Rathod reportedly suffered serious wounds and was admitted to an intensive care unit for specialized treatment. Other injured individuals include Dasu, Somibai, Papibai, Kiran Rathod and Vishal Rathod. Medical authorities are monitoring their condition, while police continue to record statements from the victims.
Family members of the injured have strongly denied allegations of financial wrongdoing. One representative stated that temple ornaments had been entrusted to elders of the community for safe keeping many years ago and that there had been no misuse of temple funds or valuables. They alleged that their group was attacked without justification while carrying out maintenance work at the temple.
According to this version, volunteers were repainting the temple building using personal funds as part of preparations for the upcoming festival. They claimed that another group objected to the work, insisting that financial accounts should first be clarified before any renovation continued. The disagreement allegedly sparked fresh arguments that eventually turned violent.
The opposing group, however, has maintained that it only sought accountability regarding temple finances and property. Members argued that questions about the management of public donations and temple assets deserved clear answers. They accused the rival group of avoiding transparency and reacting aggressively during the confrontation.
The incident has drawn significant attention across the district because the Durga Devi Temple holds great religious importance for local communities. Every festival attracts thousands of pilgrims, making peaceful management of the temple essential for maintaining public confidence and harmony.
Following the violence, supporters from both groups gathered outside the office of the Superintendent of Police demanding strict legal action. Protesters called for an impartial investigation and urged authorities to identify those responsible for the assault regardless of their influence within the community.
Police officials have appealed for calm and assured residents that the case will be investigated fairly. Authorities are examining complaints filed by both sides and are expected to register appropriate legal cases based on the available evidence. Additional security measures have also been considered to prevent further tension in the area.
Community leaders have expressed concern that the conflict could affect preparations for the upcoming temple festival if the dispute remains unresolved. They have urged both groups to cooperate with investigators and avoid spreading misinformation or provoking further unrest.
Legal experts note that disputes involving religious institutions often require careful handling because they involve both public sentiment and financial accountability. They believe that transparent auditing and open communication can help prevent similar conflicts in the future.
As the investigation continues, residents are hoping that the truth behind the allegations regarding temple accounts and valuables will emerge through official inquiry rather than public confrontation. Many devotees have appealed for peace, emphasizing that the temple should remain a symbol of faith and unity instead of becoming the center of prolonged conflict.
The Bagalkot incident serves as a reminder that disagreements over the administration of religious institutions can quickly escalate when trust breaks down. Authorities are now focused on restoring order, ensuring justice for the injured, and allowing the community to prepare for the upcoming festival in a peaceful atmosphere.
