Heavy Rain Alert Across Karnataka Schools Closed in Parts of Kodagu and Chikkamagaluru

Several parts of Karnataka continue to experience widespread monsoon showers, prompting authorities to issue fresh weather alerts for the coming days. The India Meteorological Department has forecast heavy rainfall across coastal Karnataka and the Malnad region on August 1 and August 2, with strong winds expected in several districts. As a precautionary measure, district administrations have declared holidays for schools and anganwadi centres in selected areas where persistent rain has increased the risk of disruption.

The latest forecast suggests that the southwest monsoon remains active over northern interior Karnataka while rainfall activity is expected to continue across coastal and southern interior districts. Weather officials have advised residents in vulnerable areas to stay cautious, particularly in regions prone to waterlogging, landslides and overflowing streams.

Kodagu and Chikkamagaluru are among the districts that have already taken preventive measures in response to the weather conditions. In Kodagu district, continuous rainfall over the past several days has led local authorities to suspend classes in Madikeri and Somwarpet taluks. Anganwadi centres and schools have remained closed to ensure the safety of children as heavy showers continue across the district.

A similar decision has been taken in Koppa taluk of Chikkamagaluru district, where educational institutions and anganwadi centres have been given a holiday due to the ongoing rain. Officials said the decision was made to avoid any weather related risks for students and staff while transportation remains challenging in several rural areas.

Dakshina Kannada district has also witnessed an intensification of rainfall. In view of the heavy rain forecast, the district administration has declared a holiday for all schools and colleges up to the pre university level. Authorities have appealed to parents and students to cooperate with safety measures and avoid unnecessary travel during periods of intense rainfall.

According to the weather department, Udupi and Uttara Kannada districts are expected to receive heavy rainfall accompanied by strong winds reaching speeds of 40 to 50 kilometres per hour. Dakshina Kannada is also likely to witness intense showers throughout the day. Residents living near rivers and low lying areas have been advised to remain alert as rainfall continues to strengthen across the coastal belt.

In northern interior Karnataka, Belagavi and Dharwad districts are expected to receive heavy rainfall at isolated places. Wind speeds in these districts could touch 50 to 60 kilometres per hour during periods of intense weather activity. Meanwhile, moderate rainfall has been forecast for Bagalkote, Bidar, Gadag, Haveri, Kalaburagi, Koppal, Raichur, Vijayapura and Yadgir districts.

Southern interior Karnataka is also likely to remain under the influence of active monsoon conditions. Heavy rainfall is expected in isolated parts of Shivamogga and Chikkamagaluru, while Kodagu and Hassan may continue receiving significant rainfall over the next two days. Other districts including Bengaluru Urban, Bengaluru Rural, Ballari, Chamarajanagar, Chikkaballapur, Chitradurga, Davanagere, Kolar, Mandya, Mysuru, Ramanagara, Tumakuru and Vijayanagara are likely to experience light to moderate showers.

The weather forecast for August 2 indicates that rainfall activity will continue across much of the state. Coastal districts including Dakshina Kannada, Udupi and Uttara Kannada are once again expected to receive heavy rain. In southern Karnataka, Shivamogga is likely to remain under a heavy rain alert, while Kodagu, Hassan and Chikkamagaluru may continue to receive moderate rainfall at several places. Gusty winds of 30 to 40 kilometres per hour are also expected in many districts.

The recent rainfall pattern reflects an active southwest monsoon across Karnataka. During the 24 hour period ending Friday evening, rainfall remained particularly strong across northern interior Karnataka while coastal regions received above normal precipitation. Southern interior districts also recorded widespread rainfall, helping improve water availability in several reservoirs and agricultural areas.

Among the highest rainfall recorded during the latest observation period was Kollur in Udupi district, which received 9 centimetres of rain. Bhagamandala in Kodagu and Agumbe in Shivamogga each recorded 7 centimetres. Aurad in Bidar registered 6 centimetres, while Sringeri in Chikkamagaluru, Virajpet in Kodagu and Somwarpet in Kodagu also reported 6 centimetres of rainfall each.

Officials are closely monitoring rainfall trends as the monsoon continues to strengthen across different parts of the state. Emergency teams remain on standby in districts vulnerable to flooding and landslides, while local administrations have been instructed to respond quickly to any weather related emergencies. Public Works Department personnel and disaster response teams have also been alerted in sensitive regions.

Authorities have advised people living in hilly areas to remain cautious, particularly during periods of continuous rain. Residents have been urged to avoid crossing flooded roads, stay away from overflowing rivers and streams, and postpone non essential travel whenever possible. Farmers have also been advised to monitor local weather updates before carrying out field activities.

The continuing monsoon is expected to benefit agriculture and improve reservoir storage across Karnataka. However, officials have stressed that public safety remains the top priority as rainfall intensity may fluctuate over the next few days. With heavy showers likely in several districts and educational institutions remaining closed in selected regions, the state administration continues to monitor the evolving weather situation and issue timely advisories to the public.
