Covid-19 tension start again: Reported New variant Cicada in 25 states

As of late March 2026, the variant has been detected in at least 25 to 29 states (including New York, California, Florida, and Texas).

Covid-19: The BA.3.2 variant, nicknamed “Cicada,” is a newly identified, highly mutated strain of COVID-19 that has been gaining attention in the U.S. and globally in March 2026.

Health officials have dubbed it “Cicada” because, much like the insect, it appears to have evolved from an older lineage (BA.3) that had been “underground” or undetected since early 2022, only to re-emerge recently with significant changes.

Current status in the U.S:

As of late March 2026, the variant has been detected in at least 25 to 29 states (including New York, California, Florida, and Texas). Most cases have been identified through wastewater surveillance and traveler-based genomic screening at airports rather than clinical doctor visits, suggesting it is circulating quietly.

It currently accounts for a small fraction (roughly 0.2% to 4%) of cases in the U.S., though it has reached levels as high as 30% in parts of Europe like Denmark and Germany.

What Makes ‘Cicada’ Different?

The primary concern for scientists is its high mutation count.

70–75 Mutations: It carries significantly more mutations in its spike protein than previous dominant strains like JN.1 or XFG. It is so genetically distinct, experts are concerned it may be better at “slipping past” the immunity provided by older vaccines or prior infections.

Importantly, there is no evidence yet that Cicada causes more severe illness or higher hospitalization rates than other recent Omicron descendants.

Covid-19 New variant Cicada Symptoms:

While generally similar to previous strains, doctors have noted a few common reports:

1. Severe Sore Throat: Often described by patients as a “razorblade” sensation.

2. Gastrointestinal Issues: Some reports of nausea or diarrhea.

3. Standard Symptoms: Fatigue, headache, runny nose, cough, and low-grade fever.

Should You Be Worried?

The World Health Organization (WHO) currently classifies BA.3.2 as a “Variant Under Monitoring.” This means they are watching it closely, but it has not yet been labeled a “Variant of Concern.” Current vaccines and antiviral treatments are still expected to provide strong protection against severe disease, even if the variant is better at causing mild “breakthrough” infections
