Modi signed US trade deal out of fear and pressure, alleges Rahul Gandhi

New Delhi: Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi on Monday launched a sharp attack on Prime Minister Narendra Modi, alleging that he signed the recent India–US trade agreement under pressure and out of fear. Gandhi claimed that two major developments in the United States had forced the Prime Minister to rush into the deal.

Addressing the media outside Parliament, the Congress leader said, “Narendra Modi is scared. The very people who created his image are now beginning to burst it. There are two pressures on him in the United States – one is the case against Adani, and the other is the Epstein files which are yet to be made public. Because of these two reasons, India and the US have suddenly signed this agreement.”

Rahul Gandhi alleged that nothing substantial had changed in the trade negotiations that had remained stalled for the last four months. “For months there was no progress. But suddenly, yesterday evening, the agreement was signed. There is some reason known to him, not to me, that forced this hurried decision,” he remarked.

He further accused the Prime Minister of compromising India’s interests to protect his personal and political image. “Modi has compromised. The image he built spending thousands of crores can burst like a balloon at any moment,” Gandhi said.

Meanwhile, chaos erupted in the Lok Sabha as Opposition members protested against not being allowed to speak on the issue. Eight MPs were suspended for disrupting House proceedings and raising slogans.

The suspended MPs include Congress members Amrinder Singh Raja Warring, Gurjeet Singh Aujla, Hibi Eden, Dean Kuriakose, Prashant Padole, C. Kiran Kumar Reddy, Manickam Tagore and CPI(M) member S. Venkatesan. The suspension proposal was moved by Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju and passed by voice vote after Acting Speaker Dilip Saikia named the members.

The Opposition condemned the suspensions, calling them an attempt to silence dissenting voices in Parliament. The developments have further intensified the political confrontation between the ruling BJP and the Congress-led Opposition.
